| Dedicated server |
A dedicated server is simply a computer in which all of the computing resources are allocated (or dedicated) to a single client. The dedicated server is leased or purchased by the client and is usually housed in a data center which provides services such as environmental control, security and a connection to the Internet. Often large websites require one or more dedicated servers to run their website effectively given the site's traffic, CPU and memory requirements. Specifications for each dedicated server can vary widely and are dependent upon the applications it will be used for. Each dedicated server comes with a pre-specified amount of storage (hard disk space), memory (RAM) and bandwidth which can be upgraded as needed.
A dedicated server gives the end-user full control over their website(s) without having to worry about someone else's website(s) hogging the resources of the system, which can happen on a shared server.
